Card Centering Calculator & Grade Estimator

Centering is one of the four sub-grades of trading card grading (along with Corners, Edges, and Surface). Poor centering can keep an otherwise perfect card from achieving a PSA 10, BGS Black Label, CGC Pristine 10 or TAG Pristine 10. Use CCGrader to measure your card borders and estimate your centering grade before submitting.

How to Check Your Card Centering

Our calculator lets you measure your trading card borders in seconds. Follow these steps to estimate your PSA, BGS, CGC or TAG centering grade before you submit:

  1. Upload your card image — Click the upload zone or drag & drop a high-resolution scan or photo of your card (Pokémon, MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Lorcana, sports cards).
  2. Crop & fix perspective — If the photo was taken at an angle, use the built-in crop and perspective correction tools to straighten the card.
  3. Auto-detect borders — Press the Auto button and our custom AI model will instantly detect the card edges and place measurement guidelines for you.
  4. Refine measurements — Drag the guideline dots to fine-tune the border positions, or measure manually with the border buttons. Use the 3× magnifier for sub-pixel precision.
  5. Read your estimated grade — The centering ratios and estimated PSA, BGS, CGC & TAG grades update in real time. Switch between Front and Back to check both sides.

PSA Card Centering Standards

Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) evaluates card centering as a ratio. They allow slightly more leniency on the back of the card compared to the front.

CGC Cards (Certified Guaranty Company) is known for consistent digital grading. They use the same centering tolerances as PSA for the back but are stricter on the front.

Card Centering Grading FAQs

To measure Pokémon card centering, upload a high-quality scan or photograph of your card. You can click the "Auto" button in the center to automatically detect the card borders and let our AI model estimate the measurements instantly, which you can then refine by dragging the guidelines on the canvas. Alternatively, you can measure manually by selecting a border button (Top, Bottom, Left, Right) and drawing the measurement line from the outer card edge to the inner artwork print line.

A centering ratio of 60/40 means one border is 1.5 times wider than the opposite border. For example, if your left border is 15 pixels wide and your right border is 10 pixels wide (total 25px), the split is 60% vs 40% (15/25 = 0.60, 10/25 = 0.40). In PSA grading, 60/40 centering is the minimum standard required on the front of a card to qualify for a PSA 10 Gem Mint grade.

To achieve a PSA 10 Gem Mint grade, your card's front centering must be 55/45 or better on both axes (horizontal and vertical), and the back must be 75/25 or better. If the front exceeds 55/45 on either axis — even with perfect corners, edges and surface — the card will receive at most a PSA 9. Use our calculator to verify your card meets these thresholds before submitting.

Yes. Grading companies like PSA, Beckett (BGS), CGC and TAG apply the same mathematical centering ratios to all trading cards — sports cards (Baseball, Basketball, Football, Soccer) and TCG cards (Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Lorcana). The border sizes are measured horizontally and vertically, and the worst-performing alignment determines the centering sub-grade. Our tool handles any standard-size card.

No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Your card image is never uploaded to any server — all processing, including AI auto-detection, happens on your device. The tool is 100% free and fully client-side.

We trained a custom AI model specifically for detecting card borders and artwork boundaries. It provides a strong initial estimate, and we continuously improve its accuracy. Results can vary depending on image quality, lighting and card design, so we always recommend refining the auto-detected guidelines by dragging the dots to match the exact border edges. Combined with the 3× magnifier, you can achieve sub-pixel measurement precision.

No. Estimated centering grades are calculated based on the published standards of each grading company (PSA, BGS, CGC, TAG). The final grade you receive also depends on other sub-grades (corners, edges, surface) and is subject to grader subjectivity and the physical inspection process. Our tool helps you pre-screen centering only — always factor in the full card condition.
